Memory 13 (trivial positive)
Ivan's power; being a hero. Form of a crown - one use.
Episode 8 - everything between this memory and this one!
Ivan asks Kotetsu to take a look at his power like he did for the students. His power is shapeshifting! He mimics Kotetsu. Kotetsu is impressed, but Ivan says it's not a useful power for saving people, since it doesn't give him people's powers or anything, just their looks. Kotetsu tells him not to overthink it: his power will definitely be useful eventually!!
But Ivan is too depressed for this; eventually Kotetsu has to tell him to stop crying with his face, and he transforms back. He says there's someone else, a NEXT at the head of his class, who should have been a hero in his place. Kotetsu tries to assure him that since he's the hero and this person isn't, clearly he's the better hero in the end. This only makes Ivan more upset, and he yells and runs away.
Later, Kotetsu is sitting with Barnaby talking to the principal, who is telling stories about how amazing and popular Barnaby was in school. Kotetsu interrupts to ask what Ivan was like in school. The principal tells him that he was very subdued, always hanging around another kid, the guy at the head of the class. But there was a tragedy - the other guy, Edward, was involved in an incident. He tried to step in to help during a hostage situation (against Academy rules, which prohibit using powers outside), and when things turned bad, he accidentally shot the hostage. Even though it was an accident, he was charged with murder and went to prison. And incidentally, the principal had just received a call that he'd escaped from prison.
They here a well-timed yell from outside, and run out to find Edward, whose powers apparently involve turning things/himself to sand, attempting to drown Ivan in the sand. They interrupt, and Edward vanishes into the ground.
Ivan yells at them that they should have let him kill him, since it's his fault, and explains that Edward asked him for help back then, and if he'd been able to help none of it would have happened. They're all silent for a moment, before Kotetsu speaks up.
KOTETSU: Then you have to stop him. ...He committed a crime because of you, right? Will you let that happen again?
IVAN: But I can't do anything.
KOTETSU: So you'll make the same mistake?
Ivan has a flashback and looks stern.
KOTETSU: Remember, you're a hero now.
Ivan nods, then stands up with determination and runs off.
KOTETSU: ...I'm so good.
BARNABY: Don't say that about yourself.
KOTETSU: Huh?
BARNABY: Please, just stop. It looks bad.
KOTETSU: It's no big deal! Let's go.
He runs after Ivan.
